Join this month’s meeting of Book Society’s “Leading Ladies” Book Club!
This month we’re beginning the new year with a story about the women who make us, sometimes in spite of themselves. Our latest selection, Mother Mary Comes to Me, is Arundhati Roy’s first memoir, written in the aftermath of her mother’s death in 2022. Roy was shaken by the force of her own grief for a mother she had left home to escape at eighteen. Mary Roy was a single mother, the founder of a school in Kerala, and a tireless advocate for women’s property rights. She was also volatile, demanding, and often hard to love. Roy calls her “my shelter and my storm.”
