Join Book Society for a powerful evening exploring the fault lines between fiction, science, and survival.


We’ll begin with a reading from Tilt, the gripping debut novel by climate journalist Emma Pattee. Called “a moving adrenaline rush that also manages to be very funny” by The New York Times Book Review, Tilt follows Annie, 37 weeks pregnant, as she journeys across a post-earthquake Portland—on foot—navigating the upheaval of both her city and her own impending motherhood. Equal parts heart-pounding and heartfelt, it's a story that explores what happens when the ground shifts beneath our feet—literally and emotionally.


Following the reading, Emma will be joined in conversation by Savvas Marcou, a third-year PhD candidate at the Berkeley Seismology Lab and member of Professor Richard Allen’s earthquake early warning group.
