What happens when the way your brain makes connections becomes the way you tell a story?
In Troika, Irena Smith turns a three-day drive down California's Central Coast into an Odyssey — three generations of women, a winter storm, ravenous ostriches, and an urgent search for oat milk. Along the way she braids California history, Russian proverbs, internet memes, and Greek mythology into one book, and somehow it holds.
Elizabeth Rynecki — author of Chasing Portraits and host of the podcast That Sinking Feeling: Adventures in ADHD and Ship Salvage — sits down with Irena to talk about how that braiding actually works: neurodivergence and the shape of a narrative, memory versus record, and the nerve it takes to write about family who are still around to read it.
